Letter from the Interim Dean The Ohio Urban University Program (UUP)—The State’s Economic Development Resource

As Interim Dean of the Levin College, I am asking for your help in letting the Ohio House Speaker and Governor Strickland know how important the Ohio Urban University Program (UUP) funding is to the Levin College of Urban Affairs at CSU.  As you may have read in the papers, the state has eliminated funding for the UUP.  Since 1979, this funding has supported public policy research, database capabilities, the forum and other programs that our community turns to for reliable statistics and expert analysis on urban issues. The Plain Dealer wrote an excellent editorial in favor of funding the UUP, “Save a Cleveland State University program that is trying to save the state” I encourage you to read it.

The Ohio Urban University ProgramThe college has developed a website for external support of UUP funding—http://urban.csuohio.edu/uup. Posted are communication pieces on the accomplishments of the UUP, the history of the UUP, short talking points, and an in-depth look at the impact of research done with UUP funding.  There are also instructions on how the Levin College is asking for your support through letter-writing.  Letters should be sent directly to Molly Schnoke at m.s.schnoke@csuohio.edu (either electronically on your letterhead with a signature or via postage-paid mail).  On behalf of the UUP and the Levin College of Urban Affairs, I  will personally deliver them in Columbus.

The UUP makes it possible for the state’s urban universities to assist with the revitalization efforts of the State and its communities and is the state’s economic development resource.  Please consider supporting this initiative.

Sincerely,
Dr. Edward W. (Ned) Hill

Bringing our Neighborhood Together with Urban Archaeology
A Successful Hands-on Experience Program

Jan Ziegler and Richard KleinFor the past five years, the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Levin College of Urban Affairs at Cleveland State University have jointly sponsored a very special urban archaeology program for inner city high school students called Bringing our Neighborhood Together.  Under the direction of Janice Ziegler, the Western Reserve Historical Society’s Vice President for Education and Public Programs and Dr. Richard Klein, Levin College Adjunct Professor, this hands-on experience enables students to go beyond the conventional classroom to explore their own neighborhood and community history through direct exploration. The program also fulfills state-mandated educational benchmarks in history, language arts, math and social sciences.

Urban Dig 3Students begin Bringing our Neighborhood Together with research of the history of the neighborhood surrounding the dig site.  They also study the role their families have played in the development and evolution of their neighborhoods.  The next step is an organized urban dig in or on the school property.  Part of their in-depth research included visits to Special Collections at the CSU library and the Levin College’s GIS Lab.

Initially funded as part of a History Channel “Save Our History” grant, this program began with a group of highly dedicated 10th graders from the Academy of Creative Expressions at East High School.

After several years of digs at the campus and in the neighborhood, the Academy of Creative Expressions at East High is currently taking this program to another level.  Students are creating a new permanent museum room in their school.  It will house the neighborhood artifacts found at the various digs, school memorabilia, student-created time lines and interpretive maps of the Hough neighborhood.

The success of the program led a second high school to join the ranks.  Lighthouse Academy at East Tech adopted the program last spring.  It was an immediate hit and has been made a permanent part of the 9th grade curriculum.  Discussions are occurring with several other high schools in this region as the program continues to expand.   Dr. Klein said that the hands-on experience is very important, “Participants get a better understanding of what university life is about and the importance of higher education at CSU.  The program also promotes civic and community responsibility.”
