Background
The Center for Election Integrity sponsored an unprecedented Collaborative Public Audit of the results from the November 7, 2006 General Election in Cuyahoga County. We called for the involvement and support of students, faculty and professionals from the community for this initiative to audit the vote, especially those with strong accounting, math or computer science expertise. This is an effort to establish the precedent for independent public verification of reported election results. Perhaps a historic first for Ohio, this initiative received the unanimous approval of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.
The audit began on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2007. The methodology and conduct of the audit were under the collaborative control of representatives from the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party, the Cuyahoga County Republican Party, and three election reform organizations (League of Women Voters, Greater Cleveland Voter Coalition, and Citizens' Alliance for Secure Elections - CASE Ohio). The Center for Election Integrity acted as coordinator but the collaborating organizations determined the makeup of the audit.
This initiative demonstrates that common ground for election fairness and accuracy can be established by persons of good faith despite diverse political affiliations.
