Projects - ACT: Advancing Central's Health Together

ACT Aim 2: Find a community focus within the context of obesity and its consequences

Objectives:

Develop data on the prevalence of obesity and obesity-related conditions in the Central neighborhood
  • Develop presentations and materials to help residents understand seriousness of obesity and its consequences
  • Prioritize areas of concern and commitment
  • Status:

In 2006-2007, the project team collected data and shared with the broader community through a series of key stakeholder interviews, surveys, and focus groups. The efforts allowed for the project team to solicit input from over 400 members of the Central neighborhood.

Residents clearly indicated what would be the best starting place in addressing their community’s health concerns and were very willing to work together to prioritize their interest. The community selected a prevention focus that emphasized a target population of children. Women were selected as the second target group. Upon further investigation with community residents, it was noted that it was important to include parent/family guardians into the program.
