Sacred Meaning in the Christian Art of the Middle Ages

Fliegel, Stephen N.
Center for Sacred Landmarks, Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, 2004

Fliegel translates the visual language of sacred medieval art and provides insight into the medieval mind. The text explores the signs and symbols inherent in medieval images of saints and holy persons, the crucifixion and ecclesiastical architecture. The monograph is illustrated with photographs of paintings, sculptures, houses of worship, and other works of art, many of which are part of the Cleveland Museum of Art's (CMA) collection. Fliegal is Curator of Medieval Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
