Philip Star, Director of the Center for Neighborhood Development since 1988, joined the Urban Center after directing the Cleveland Tenants Organization for 10 years. In addition to managing that United Way-funded agency, he has been a consultant with the National Housing Institute and the Housing Law Reform Project at the University of Michigan. As Director of the Center for Neighborhood Development, he has instituted internships at community development corporations for undergraduate urban studies majors; developed a mediation program for the Cleveland Housing Court; and created Neighborhood Leadership Cleveland, a grassroots leadership program, for residents of Cleveland neighborhoods. He co-authored "Management of Neighborhood Development: Community Development Corporations," a chapter in Managing Local Government Public Administration in Practice (Sage, 1991); was co-editor of Revitalizing Urban Neighborhoods (University Press of Kansas, 1996); and co-authored "Neighborhood Leadership Today for Cleveland's Future," a chapter in The New American City Faces Its Regional Future: A Cleveland Perspective (Ohio University Press, 1999). Recent research and evaluation activities have included a local organizational case study funded through the Pew Charitable Trusts' Neighborhood Preservation Initiative, an evaluation of the Sisters of Charity Foundation Affordable Housing Initiative, and an Annie E. Casey Foundation-funded research project on the application of social capital theory to neighborhood investment. Mr. Star holds a bachelor's degree from University of Wisconsin, Madison; an master's degree in History from New York University; and a J.D. from Case Western Reserve University. Sample Syllabi: |
