Thomas Vanover was a participant in the Cleveland Management Academy (CMA) and was promoted to the position of Commissioner of Code Enforcement for the City of Cleveland Department of building inspectors! He credits his promotion to the experience he gained with CMA. Thomas recently told us "CMA is one of the most important things I’ve done in my career".

Jeffrey L. Brudney, Albert A. Levin Chair of Urban Studies and Public Service, has been invited to make significant presentations in South Dakota the week of September 19. First, he will present the annual "Farber Lecture" at the University of South Dakota on, "An Introduction to the World of Volunteering." Second, he will present the Keynote Address at the Second Annual South Dakota Nonprofit Management Conference and Governor's Philanthropy Day (the Governor of South Dakota is expected to attend) on, "Getting to Number 1 Among the States in Volunteering." Lastly, he will present a workshop at the Conference on "Strategic Management of Volunteers."
Joel Elvery was recently on "The Sound of Ideas" discussing the topic of putting a human face on the income losses and poverty increases across Ohio and the nation. Host Mike McIntyre also spoke with George Zeller, Economic Research Analyst and Steve Wertheim of United Way Services of Cleveland. Iryna Lendel co-authored a book chapter that has just been published: The Emerging Industry Puzzle: Optics Unplugged Maryann P. Feldman and Iryna Lendel. The book is titled Beyond Territory Dynamic Geographies of Knowledge Creation, Diffusion and Innovation. Edited by Harald Bathe, Maryann Feldman, Dieter F. Levin College's Center for Leadership Development was one of 12 recipients of the Innovative Transit Workforce Development Program! We have been funded at $286,687 and together with the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) we will train (up to 90% of current) GCRTA managers in a public management certification program. The program will enhance the retention, development, and attraction of leaders for GCRTA and function as a national training model for the transit industry. The goal is to enable agency managers to transfer 'best practice' management theory into practical application.

Jim Robey - Mohr Partners Inc., an international corporate real estate advisor, appointed James Robey, Ph.D. to managing director of its Cleveland office.
Robey has more than 25 years of experience in the economic development and urban studies field. He previously served on the economic development team at Cleveland State University’s Economic Development Program with the Levin College of Urban Affairs, was director of Economic Research at the Greater Cleveland Growth Organization and most recently, worked as vice president of research with Team NEO.
Robey will join Mohr alongside Dennis Burnside, managing partner, and Bob Redmond, managing director.

The 2010 Urban Development Process/Market Analysis class in the Levin College of Urban Affairs focused on determining the marketability and financial viability of development and redevelopment projects in the urban context. For a final project in the class, each student selected a potential development project and conducted a thorough marketability and financial viability analysis on their project. The projects selected ranged from luxury apartments in university circle to high rise, mixed use buildings across from the west side market. The culmination of the final project was a student competition in which the 5 members of the class with the highest grades on the final project presented their project to a panel of judges made up of experts from the cleveland real estate industry. The presenters were Joan Chase, Bryce Sylvester, Mark Ciepiel, John Vitou, and Richard Piiparinen. In addition to the invaluable experience of participating in the presentation competition, the participants were awarded cash prizes totaling $4,100 made available by the generosity of the members of the panel of judges. Congratulations!

Wendy Slone submitted an article to the Oxford Round Table that will be published soon. Wendy also has a text book that was accepted for publication with University Press. The title of the book is: "Discretion and the Administrator: The Case of Child Care Reform in Ohio". The book will be out Spring 2011. Congratulations!
Jeffrey L. Brudney, Ph.D., Albert A. Levin Chair of Urban Studies and Public Service, met with the Transition Team of Edward FitzGerald, Cuyahoga County Government Executive-Elect, to discuss a recommendation to establish an Office of Public Engagement in the new county government. Earlier this year, Dr. Brudney had co-chaired a committee that developed the proposal for the Office of Public Engagement.
Howard Thompson, 1992 graduate of the MPA program here at the Levin College of Urban Affairs, recently announced that he accepted a position with the City of Cleveland Heights as Director of Economic Development. His primary goal and objective will be to add value to the community through the attraction of new business, the retention and expansion of existing business clients and dedicating time to packaging and promoting the highest level of resources that will add to the quality of life for Cleveland Heights residents and businesses. Tim Kobie who was a graduate of the MUPDD program in 2005 as well as a Ph. D. graduate in 2010 is now working for Social Compact as a GIS Research Analyst. His GIS work for Social Compact's Drilldown Report will include retail analyses, foreclosure analyses and other research projects. In addition, Tim will be developing and leading new research projects as well as provide research support for ongoing projects and research led by others at Social Compact. Congratulations!

Jeffrey L. Brudney, Albert A. Levin Chair of Urban Studies and Public Service, has received an invitation from the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Programme to serve on the Technical Advisory Board of the first study ever of the STATE OF THE WORLD’S VOLUNTEERISM REPORT (SWVR). Dr. Brudney will attend the first meeting of the UNV Technical Advisory Board on October 17-19, 2010, in Bonn, Germany. Dr. Brudney is the only member of the Board from the United States.
The Public Management Academy (PMA), a Center for Leadership Development program, graduated its charter cohort in the City of Wooster on Thursday, July 29th! Mayors of the three cities who sent participants were present to congratulate their administrators. They were: Mayor Bob Breneman of Wooster, Mayor David Handwerk of Orrville, and Mayor Susan Drucker of Solon. Thirteen participants completed the program. They are eligible to receive academic credit at the Levin College for their participation. Nearly half of the class expressed an interest in returning to school to take advantage of the academic credit. In addition to the mayors, Dr. Wendy Kellogg, former State Senator Grace Drake, and Rob Ziol of the Center for Leadership Development were on hand for the ceremonies. All of the mayors and their participants expressed an interest in remaining involved and possibly sending more administrators to the upcoming Public Management Academy starting Sept. 30th @ CSU.
Jennifer Alexander was recently selected to be a a board member of the Administration & Society, which is one of the top three journals in Public Administration. In addition to that, an article she wrote over a year ago is on the list of the five most read. Congratulations!
The In Tribute to the Public Service Award event was held on Tuesday, June 8th at the Hanna Theater and Mayor Frank Jackson was our 2010 honoree. It was a record breaking success, thanks to our Steering Committee Chair person, Valarie J. McCall and our Host Committee. Both the Steering and Host Committee helped raise over $80,000 in scholarship money. During his presentation of the award to Mayor Jackson, Samuel H. Miller, Co-Chairman of the Board and Treasurer of Forest City Enterprises, Inc., announced he would personally contribute $20,000 for a scholarship fund in Mayor Jackson's name. Many thanks to Mr. Miller and to everyone who contributed to the event.

Dr. Brudney assists the Public Engagement Committee for the Transition; the Committee has planned a series of Public Forums in 2010 to obtain citizen input on the new government structure.

Dr. Richard Klein received recognition for his recent work on Mayor Ralph J. Perk at the American Nationalities Association Christmas Awards meeting on December 19, 2009. Richard has developed a CSU Ralph Perk Website and is presently engaged in conducting interviews of prominent people involved in the Perk administration.
The Center for Community Planning and Development has received a grant from the Ohio Lake Erie Commission for $37,953 to continue Kirby Date's work promoting Best Local Land Use Practices to local governments across the state. Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs has named Judy and Bob Rawson as recipients of the 2009 In Tribute to the Public Service Award. The award will be presented during an In Tribute program and award ceremony on May 7 at the Hanna Theater, 2067 East 14th Street. Patrick A. Sweeney was selected to receive an Irma Lazarus Award at the Governor's Awards for the Arts in Ohio and Arts Day Luncheon that was held April 1 in Columbus. Since 1994, the Irma Lazarus Award, presented at the discretion of the Ohio Arts Council Board, honors the memory of Irma Lazarus, who made countless contributions as an arts patron, advocate and leader in the development of state funding for the arts in Ohio. It is presented to organizations or individuals who have helped shape public support for the arts through their work as advocates and have brought statewide, national and international recognition to Ohio through sustained dedication to artistic excellence.
Congratulations to Dr. Iryna Lendel on being selected as a Fulbright New Century Scholar for the 2009-10 program "The University as Innovation Driver and Knowledge Center.” As a New Century Scholar, Iryna and her colleagues will be engaging in multinational debate, discussion, and collaboration of the highest quality on a topic of critical global significance.
Congratulations to Dr. Nancy Meyer-Emerick who successfully implemented the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program at CSU. CSU-CERT consists of campus community volunteers who are trained to respond as needed in the event of a disaster or emergency situation. The volunteers participate in an extensive 20-hour training program which emphasizes hands-on practice. Trainers come from various backgrounds and included first Responders, faculty, staff, and community members. The first CSU-CERT class graduated November 2008. Members of CSU-CERT came from all across campus. Levin College members included Bill Weber (environmental studies student), JeJuana Brown (urban studies student), Bob Martel (Levin College systems administrator), and Jane McCrone (Levin College communications). JeJuana Brown, who is also a CSU staff member at plant services, was selected by her peers as the new Co-Director of CSU-CERT. Dr. Camilla Stivers received the prestigious Brownlow Award from the National Academy of Public Administration for the book Governance in Dark Times published in March 2008. The award is given each year for the book that the academy considers the best book published.
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Mary Jane Saunders is pleased to announce that as a result of an intensive internal search, Dr. Vera Vogelsang-Coombs from the Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs has been selected to become the new Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, effective July 1, 2008. Dr. Vogelsang-Coombs has been a faculty member of the Levin College of Urban Affairs since 1992, holds the rank of Associate Professor, and has been serving as the Director of the Master of Public Administration Program since 2003. She previously served as the Director of the Local Officials Leadership Academy and of the Leadership Programs within the College and has been a member of the Graduate Faculty since 1998. Her Ph.D. is in Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis, and she is a nationally recognized scholar in mayoral and council leadership, and organizational development. The College of Graduate Studies is located in Parker Hannifin Hall.

Dr. Jennifer Alexander. received the Presidential Merit Award for organizing a symposium co-sponsored by the American Society of Public Administratiors(ASPA) and the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organization and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) that will look at the challenges of public-nonprofit partnerships in Cleveland. The award was presented by ASPA. The Cleveland Foundation granted $7,500 toward the national symposium: Public Private Partnerships: Accountability and Performance Measurement in the Hollow State, to be held at the Levin College October 23-24. Additional contributions have been received from the Sherwick Foundation, the MacGregor Foundation, and the Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services.
Congratulations to Dr. Virginia Benson, who received the Herbert Strawbridge Educator's Award for her longstanding contributions to educating Urban Design seminar students about the issues in the Flats. The award is given from the Flats Oxbow Association. Herb Strawbridge was the president of the Higbee Company and invested a great deal of time and effort in restoring the Settler's Landing, where Moses Cleaveland first set foot on Cleveland's shores. The Settler's Landing park is now a key part of the effort to bring the Towpath Trail to downtown Cleveland and the lakefront. Dr. Benson worked with Mr. Strawbridge on the Settler's Landing process and later on waterfront development issues. The Urban Design class works closely with the staff of the Flats Oxbow Association in their study of economic, infrastructure, and environmental issues in the Flats.
Congratulations to Professors Sylvester (Sy) Murray and Michael Spicer!
Both received 2007 American Society of Public Administration (ASPA) awards from the PA Times. Professor Murray received the Elmer B. Staats Award. ASPA also recognized Professor Murray for Lifetime Achievement for Distinguished Public Service. Professor Spicer received the Laverne Burchfield Award from Public Administration Review. PAR recognized Professor Spicer as the author of the best-written book review of 2007. His review is titled, "Some Reflections on Democracy and Their Implications for American Public Administration." This review appeared in PAR's Jan-Feb. volume: 343-350.
Dr. Jeffrey Brudney and recent graduate Latrice R. Jones ('08 MPA) are featured in video clips on the University's website. Dr. Brudney gives a faculty perspective on engaged teaching and Latrice speaks about her engaged learning experience as a student. Well done!
Senator Grace L. Drake was awarded the 2008 Public Health Practice Excellence Award from the Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master of Public Health. Grace Drake is the Director of the Ohio Center for the Advancement of Women in Public Service. The Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master of Public Health is a collaborative program between CSU, YSU, KSU, OU, UA and the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Dr. Roberta Steinbacher and Dr. Vera Vogelsang-Coombs were recognized as CSU Women Who Make a Difference by CSU's Women's Studies program.
