The Marshall Memorial Fellowship program is a three-week study tour in Europe designed to acquaint emerging American leaders with the European institutions, European countries and transatlantic issues that affect communities in the United States and Europe.

Each year, the Fund selects approximately 55 emerging leaders–business executives, journalists, political leaders, and social entrepreneurs – from the United States to serve as American Marshall Memorial Fellows. Successful candidates are between the ages of 28 and 40 years. The purpose of this fellowship program is to create a network of emerging American leaders who understand Europe in depth. The Fund's vision is for young American and European leaders to develop personal relations that will help to strengthen ties among nations.

The American Marshall Memorial Fellowship Program draws young leaders from across the United States. They participate in an intensive three-week program in Europe. This program gives Fellows a more comprehensive understanding of Europe and the importance of transatlantic relations. With this initiative, the German Marshall Fund will build on the existing AMMF alumni network. The Fund's plan is to create a truly transatlantic dialogue between young leaders of Europe and the United States.

The Cleveland Foundation has asked CSU's Levin College of Urban Affairs for assistance in administering the Marshall Memorial Fellowship Program locally. Our organizations believe the AMMF program is an excellent opportunity to enhance the understanding of European and American similarities and differences.

Program participants from Cleveland will become part of a transatlantic network of more than 800 young American and European leaders. American Fellows will travel to Europe in groups of 15-18 people. While overseas, those fellows are part of an intensive three-week program that the U.S. Marshall Fund has organized. This program will acquaint American participants with European social, political and economic institutions; it also provides many opportunities for dialogue with their European counterparts.

The German Marshall Fund has selected the following dates as the travel period for fellows participating in 2007:

  • Spring Fellowship: February 7 - March 2, 2008
  • Summer Fellowship: May 29 - June 22, 2008
  • Fall Fellowship: October 2 - October 26, 2008
