Maxine Goodman Levin Discretionary Fund 2009 Award Proposals

In accordance with the wishes of Maxine Goodman Levin to enhance the careers, advance the scholarship, and support research and professional development for women at the Levin College, proposals are now being accepted for discretionary fund awards. The intent of these awards is to assure that women at the Levin College have equal access to funds for research, scholarships, and professional development such as professional travel, equipment, or research project seed funding, etc. Recipients of the funds will be expected to submit a summary of how the funds were used.

Deadline: 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2009. Award Notification expected by Friday, March 27, 2009. Proposals can be dropped off at UR 322 or directed via campus mail to Jane McCrone, UR 322.


For Students and From Students

Join the CSU Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) Team.  This is a great opportunity for CSU students, faculty, and staff! The next training is offered Thursdays from 1:00-3:00 p.m., February 12 through April 16 (total of 20 hours) in the Urban Building. 

CSU CERT is comprised of campus community volunteers who are trained to respond as needed in the event of a disaster or emergency situation.  There is an extensive 20-hour training program that emphasizes hands-on practice. Trainers come from various backgrounds like first responders (fire, police and EMS), CSU faculty and staff, and community members.  Training topics include disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, terrorism and CERT, and CERT organization. CSU President Schwartz strongly supports CERT’s effort and staff and faculty will be allowed to complete 20 hours of training on CSU time with the permission of their supervisors.

The Robert A. Catlin/David W. Long Memorial Scholarship Named after committed planners and long-standing members of the Planning and the Black Community Division, The Robert A. Catlin/David W. Long Memorial Scholarship was created to foster increased interest among Black students in the field of urban planning. The $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to one student on a competitive basis to cover costs associated with the pursuit of graduate studies. Eligibility Criteria: The scholarship is available to black undergraduate students currently applying to or who have been accepted into an urban planning program for graduate studies; and black graduate students, majoring in urban planning or a related field (geography, environmental studies, urban studies, urban policy etc.).

SEEKING INTERNS
The Cleveland Foundation is seeking undergraduate, recent college graduates and graduate students to apply to our summer internship program. This program offers students meaningful career-related work and knowledge about the Greater Cleveland non-profit community (see below for list of 2009 host sites). Interns are paid $12 per hour for full-time work and attend a weekly seminar highlighting key organizations and programs being conducted in the local nonprofit and public sectors.

Jeffrey L. Brudney, Albert A. Levin Chair of Urban Studies and Public Service, published a chapter (co-authored with Chung-Lae Cho and Deil S. Wright) entitled, “Understanding the Collaborative Public Manager: Exploring Contracting Patterns and Performance for Service Delivery by State Administrative Agencies in 1998 and 2004.” The chapter appears in a new book edited by Rosemary O’Leary and Lisa Blomgren Bingham, *The Collaborative Public Manager: New Ideas for the Twenty-first Century* (Washington, DC: Georgetown University Press, 2009).

Dr. Jim Robey will speak at a January 29 program "What is the economic uture for Northeast Ohio, What is regionalism,competition or cooperation, an overview of the Advance Northeast Ohio Project." Robey will address economic conditions and will focus on Northeast Ohio. The program is co-sponsored by the Hudson Library and Historical Society and the Northeast Ohio Region League of Women Voters.
