Friday Conversations--Weekly update on the status of UUP Funding

Interim Dean Ned Hill held the first information session for Levin College faculty and staff on the status of UUP funding in the State of Ohio’s next fiscal budget. The weekly sessions called “Friday Conversations” are co-hosted by Grace Drake and Patrick Sweeney.  A targeted strategy to reinstate UUP funding is currently being implemented and will continue to mobilize throughout the year.  Molly Schnoke is heading Levin College internal communications for this effort.  The next Friday Conversation is February 20 10:00-11:00 a.m. in the Atrium.

The Center for Leadership Development hosts the Career Executive Service Program Track #4, Session Number Three, Negotiation & Mediation on Friday, February 27, 2009, 8:00 a.m. - noon, Bonda Community Board Room. The Track Coordinator is Kenneth Kovach, Assistant Track Coordinator is Dr. Sanda Kaufman.  Guest panelists include Dr. Connie Ozawa of Portland Oregon and Ms. Maggie Lewis of Columbus.

Cleveland State University and Siegal College Announce a Special Seminar: Traditional Jewish and Muslim Legal Attitudes Towards Mortgage Lending, and its Application to the Current Mortgage Crisis

Thursday, March 19, 2009; 12:00- 3:00 p.m. at CSU’s Levin College of Urban Affairs.

Led by Robert Simons, Ph.D., CSU.  The panelists include:  Rabbi Moshe Berger, Ph.D., Siegal College; Rabbi Ephraim Nisenbaum, Jewish Learning Connection; Mark Sundahl, J.D., CSU; Zeki Saritoprak, Ph.D., John Carroll University; Mitchell C. Schneider, J.D., Legacy Capital; and Fareed Siddiq, Financial Advisor, Smith Barney
 
This 2-hour panel will explore the traditional lending practices of Judaism and Islam.  Ribbis (interest) under Jewish law (Halacha); and Riba (interest) and market rules (usul al-mua'malat) under Islamic law (Sharia) are quite similar in principle, yet differ in application, both from each other and from current secular lending practice.  Panelists will also discuss the current lending crisis, mortgage defaults and foreclosures, securitization of pools of assets and derivatives and discuss if adherence to these traditional lending/business models have prevented or changed outcomes.

SAVE THE DATE!  2nd Annual Government Career Day!
The 2nd Annual Government Career Day will be held on Friday, April 3, 2008 in the Atrium of the Urban Affairs Building, from 9:00am – 2:00pm.  Over 40 agencies from all levels of government are expected to attend.  Special workshops dealing with the federal government application process will be offered by government representatives throughout the day.

Students and alumni are invited to come and explore the many opportunities available in government.  Learn about writing effective KSA statements, navigating the usajobs web site, and how to get a job with the State of Ohio. Network with agency representatives as they discuss their own careers in government service as well as the openings they anticipate in their agencies.

Interim Dean Ned Hill published the article “Understanding the economic performance of metropolitan areas in the United States” with Pamela Blumenthal and Harold Wolman of George Washington University, in Urban Studies, 46(3).

Sally Levine, an instructor at Levin College, wrote an article in Crain’s Real Estate Commercial and Industrial and it will be available on February 28.  The article, "A Broad Approach,"  discusses the theme of "universal design" in architecture.

Dr. Mark Rosentraub was quoted in the Voice of San Diego.org article “No Salary Cap:  A New Wrinkle to Stadium Search.”

Dr. Rosentraub is quoted on The Score in the posting “Indy’s sports strategy under fire.”

Steve Minter was quoted in the Plain Dealer article, “ Cuyahoga Arts and Culture chief resigns” on February 11, 2009

Norm Krumholz is noted in The Cauldron article “The U-Pass:  You can choose the fate” on February 2, 2009

Dr. Richard Klein was the featured speaker at the February 2008 Hudson Heritage Association meeting.  His topic "Effective Planning in Historic Communities: Case Studies Sudbury, MA and Hudson, OH."


Maxine Goodman Levin Discretionary Fund 2009 Award Proposals-Deadline: 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2009

In accordance with the wishes of Maxine Goodman Levin to enhance the careers, advance the scholarship, and support research and professional development for women at the Levin College, proposals are now being accepted for discretionary fund awards. The intent of these awards is to assure that women at the Levin College have equal access to funds for research, scholarships, and professional development such as professional travel, equipment, or research project seed funding, etc. Recipients of the funds will be expected to submit a summary of how the funds were used.

Deadline: 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 26, 2009. Award Notification expected by Friday, March 27, 2009. Proposals can be dropped off at UR 322 or directed via campus mail to Jane McCrone, UR 322.
