At the request of the Council for World Affairs on April 1st Mittie Davis Jones met with a group of 13 visitors from the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program who were from various South American countries. Two interpreters accompanied them to facilitate communication. They are being hosted by the Council of World Affairs in Cleveland and will be here for about a week. Their program is entitled: Engaging At-Risk Youth in the United States: A Regional Project for the Western Hemisphere. They wanted to hear about educational programs, university and community initiatives in Cleveland.


Campbell-Steinbacher Fellowship Needs Applicants!!

The Levin College is currently seeking applications of eligible full-time senior level students for the Campbell/Steinbacher Fellowship. It is the wish of the donor that prospective fellows be engaged in applied research and/or outreach on the urban environment and that they have the opportunity to work with a professor in an experiential research activity. The fellowship provides full-time tuition, fees and a stipend for the duration of two semesters. Lisa Thomas, who once worked for Grace Drake, was recently introduced as Galion Ohio's newest city manager and she begins her new position sometime in the last two weeks of April.

Lisa currently serves as the service-safety director for the Cleveland suburb of North Olmsted and previous to that, served as commissioner of building and housing for the city of Cleveland, overseeing a budget of $35-million.

She has a PhD in public administration and public policy from Cleveland State University and says she hopes to bring a strong sense of management to her new position, using her background steeped in democracy.

No Building Left Behind: Adaptive Reuse of Sacred Buildings

About this Forum - Join us for a discussion focused the adaptive reuse of religious and other sacred buildings. Cleveland and other countless cities around the country and around the world are dealing with treasured buildings of all denominations that are left behind as communities move or outgrow the current setting.

Panelists will present strategies and options that can take us from good intentions to good decisions. This forum will be of interest to developers, real estate professionals, community organizations, elected officials, preservation advocates, planners, architects and others who are concerned about reusing religious buildings.

This program will also feature an exhibition of drawings and photographs of churches from last summer’s ICA&CA church tours. The exhibit will be on display in the Thomas F. Campbell, Ph.D. gallery on the ground floor of the Levin College of Urban Affairs throughout April.

Junior Faculty Mini-Grant Program

The Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs is proud to announce its second round of funding of its mini-grant program for junior faculty across Cleveland State University to develop preliminary data focused on addressing health disparities with the expectation to be used for future publications or larger research projects. Mini-grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded annually from 2009-2012. The deadline is May 17, 2010 . Award notification will be May 31st and the project period will be from June 1, 2010 ¨April 30, 2011.

Applicants are encouraged to incorporate cross-disciplinary research though it is not required. Each application should focus on research around health disparities with topics ranging from exploring a specific disease (i.e. diabetes, hypertension), conducting qualitative research on the impact of health disparities at the individual level, exploring community health, or health policy.
