POLY CULTURES: Food Where We Live
Congratulations Debbie Brown
Debbie Brown, former undergraduate advisor, has been promoted to Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions at CSU. Levin College students seeking undergraduate advising should contact Joan Demko.
In POLY CULTURES local fimmaker Tom Kondilis describes the thriving effort in Northeast Ohio to bring back small scale, sustainable organic farming. Advocates of a return to ecological agriculture who give testimonials in the film include the proprietors of the George Jones Memorial Farm, a 70-acre sustainable farm owned by Oberlin College and operated privately by a group of alumni. They there's City Fresh, a joint initiative that works to bring local produce to underserved areas in Cleveland and Lorain. Proprietors of the Pint Size Farm at Hale Farm in Bath describe how they grow exclusively for the Great Lakes Brewery. POLY CULTURES is a testimony to the imagination of local innovators who are dedicated to revitalizing a sustainable model of commerce.
The Cleveland International Film Festival showing of POLY CULTURES: Food Where We Live features Urban Alumnus Brad Masi ('02 MS in Urban Studies). Interim Dean Ned Hill is also in the film. For more information, visit the CIFF page or the PolyCultures Blog.
America's Greenest Campus
America’s Greenest Campus, the first nationwide contest run by the Department of Energy where campus communities are competing to reduce carbon footprints. We’re inviting the top schools in the country to join up, compete, and start reducing. This contest is an excellent opportunity for campus sustainability programs and organizations to reach out and get community members involved in making a difference, and become informed on making appropriate behavioral decisions when adjusting lifestyles for environmental sustainability.
Using online tools provided by Climate Culture, contest participants measure their individual carbon footprints, which are aggregated into a community total for each school. Whichever school can achieve the highest percentage of reductions will win up to $20,000 in cash for their campus’ sustainability initiatives.
To participate, simply visit America’s Greenest Campus website and start an account using your .edu email address. The contest is open to students, faculty, and staff. Each participating school is required to assign one member as the campus organizer, responsible for both governing their schools participation and rallying interest on campus. More information can be found here, in the official contest rules.
