Brass Chanukah Menorah
Poland, 19th Century
Lent by The Temple Museum

"Blessed art Thou... Who has wrought miracles for our fathers in those days, and at this season"
Chanukah, or the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day celebration to commemorate the victory of the weak over the tyrant. An eight branched candelabra is lit after sundown; one candle on the first night, two candles on the second night, and so on until the menorah is ablaze with light. The branches of the menorah are always on the same level with the ninth candle, the Shammash, or servant candle, used to light the other candles.
