Angel Figure Bearing Torch
Wood with Gesso, Polychrome and Metal with Electrical Fittings
circa 1873
Lent by St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church

The word ANGEL comes directly from the Greek word meaning messenger. Mentioned in the Bible, the liturgy and virtually all religious writings, angels represent God's presence. By tradition they are divided into nine choirs or divisions, each with their proper ministry and role. This angel figure stood at the rail of the sanctuary with its torches and gave a sense that one had entered Paradise.
