Processional Cross of Nails
Medieval Iron Nails, Silver Gilt with a Metal Mount
on a Wood Staff Decorated with a Gilded Metal Crown of Thorns
The cross was made in England in the 1940s and mounted on the
staff in Cleveland.
Lent by Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
The nails in the cross are from the 14th century cathedral in
Coventry which was destroyed in an air-raid in November 1940.
Their new use represents the reconciliation between England and
Germany. A limited number of crosses were made and distributed to
Anglican and Episcopal cathedrals worldwide. Each cross is used to
lead liturgical processions of ministers during the celebration of the
Eucharist and other liturgical gatherings.
