Sanctuary Gates
Bronze, American, circa 1925
Lent by St. Ignatius of Antioch Roman Catholic Church

The center of the communion rail which was traditionally the boundary of the sanctuary was left open for the ministers to enter or leave. The gates closed that opening when it was not needed. The figure of the twin peacocks drinking from a central vessel is an ancient symbol for the Eucharist: transfigured souls in Paradise drinking from the water of eternal life.
