Monstrance
Silver and Base Metal Gilded and Sivered with Plaques Ornanmented with Enamel and Glass
America, Early 20th Century
Lent by St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church

A monstrance is the vessel used to display a large consecrated host under crystal during Benediction (exposition of the Blessed Sacrament). This example follows the medieval tradition of a tower shape, while others were made in the shape of a cross or sunburst. It was placed on the altar for the adoration of the faithful as well as carried in procession. The enamel plaques at the base show the four evangelists along with two symbols of the Eucharist: Agnus Dei and the pelican in her mercy, feeding her young with her own blood.
