Tabernacle Encasement
1929-30
Lent by St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church

The symbols of the Eucharist form the relief decoration of an encasement that housed a Tabernacle (a chest-like container traditionally used to reserve the consecrated hosts for the sick). Jesus Christ is portrayed as the Paschal Lamb with the initials INRI usually found after the 9th century, on the crucifix. The triumphal cross set in a mandorla (almond shaped halo) joins the beautiful bisymmetric foliated tracery and interlaced vine among which feed a double pair of young eagles (the faithful). Notice how the overall structure imitates the facade of an early Romanesque basilica with its hipped roof, rounded arch, and sculptured tympanum.
