Sanctuary Bell
Brass with Wood Base
America, circa 1880
Lent by Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church

This bell was rung at Mass to signify various solemn moments, such as the elevation of the host and chalice. Bells were customarily rung for great and important events, and this small set of three bells would have sat on the sanctuary steps for use during the liturgy. One of the altar servers would be appointed to strike them with a small wooden mallet at the appropriate moment. Their use is still allowed in the current Missal but has been superseded by other forms of congregational response.
