Foster Armstrong is a professor of architecture and environmental design at Kent State University's Urban Design Center. His interest in church architecture (he has also written a guide to Cleveland's Sacred Landmarks published by the Kent State University Press) developed through his work with Cleveland State University's Sacred Landmarks Research Group and with the Cleveland Restoration Society, of which he is vice-president. As a child, living in nearby Avon Lake, he was impressed by Cleveland's churches during family trips through the city's neighborhoods. His daughter Cara, a student of architecture at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, helped with the research for this article.
