Career Services : Career Search Hints

Internships are a great idea

You may think you are too busy, but internships can turn into jobs. It is also a very good way to gain experience in your field. Carving out time in your schedule for an internship may bring huge benefits later on. See Internships for more information.

Join a student group

See Student Organizations for more information.

National Conferences

Consider attending national conferences. As a student you can receive travel support and sometimes more if you present a paper at the conference.

Volunteer

Volunteer on campus and in your community. Networking usually occurs when we least expect it. Seize any opportunity to meet people and make contacts. Join an organization or professional association. The Levin College hosts events throughout the year and your presence is not only appreciated but it can be worthwhile in terms of future contacts. Check out the volunteer program in CSU’s department of student life.

Participate

Make a point to attend career planning workshops and forums in the college and across campus. You can learn valuable skills from these events and have the opportunity to speak with others involved in a job search. See CSU Career Services events.

Think About It

student taking stairsYou may not realize it, but you should always be preparing for your eventual job search. This means working hard in all your classes, making relationships with fellow students, faculty and staff. It is these people who will provide you with knowledge about your field, references, and the benefit of their connections throughout the country.
