BASIC COMPUTER
TURNING ON
: Press gray square on CPU (or base) and switch right hand button on screen. You should get a green light on both if turned on correctly.GETTING ON THE COMPUTER: Put in your password and log in. If you do not have there just press enter twice and hit ‘I’ for ignore. Fill out the CUACS Account Application and return to Bob Martel to obtain an account. Follow computer directions.
When computer is done booting the screen will show ‘C:’. You are in the C drive. To get into windows (where you will do at least 90% of your computer work) enter ‘win’ and press ‘enter’. You are now in the windows environment. To enter any application position the mouse (the arrow) over the icon (picture) and double click (press the left hand side of the mouse two times quickly). Be careful not to move the mouse around when you do this or it won’t work!
GOING BETWEEN SCREENS: If you hold down the ALT key and press the TAB key you can switch between the application you are working on and Program Manager (the base screen). If you hold down ALT and press ESC you can go between all of the screens you are working on. If you hold down CTRL and press ESC the task list will appear. Press the application you want and click on SWITCH TO.
COMPUTER DRIVES: You have already seen the ‘C’ drive when you first entered the computer. This is the drive where the programs are stored. There are many other drives on the computer which you can access.
When you enter the computer using your log-on and password, you automatically get a ‘H’ drive. This drive belongs ONLY TO YOU and can only be accessed by your log-on and password only. This a good reason not to give your log-on and password out to people. You are welcome to save anything on your ‘H’ drive from personal things to homework. You can also save things on to a disk by using the ‘A’ drive (as well as open files from). YOU MAY NOT PUT NEW PROGRAMS ONTO THE COMPUTER- THEY WILL BE ERASED AND YOU WILL GET IN TROUBLE!
EXITING THE COMPUTER: Close any and all applications you are working. You may turn off the computer from the main program manager window or you may exit out of windows (FILE - EXIT WINDOWS). This will take you back to the ‘C:’. When you turn off the computer make sure you turn off both the screen and the CPU.
